Located in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, the twin towers stand at a height of 451.9 meters. They consist of 88 floors, including 5 underground levels used for parking and mechanical services. Each of the Petronas Towers is equipped with 38 elevators. The height of each tower from the base to the rooftop is 405.9 meters, plus a 46-meter antenna on top, bringing the total height of the Petronas Twin Towers to 451.9 meters.

Each tower weighs approximately 300,000 tons. The total floor area of each tower is 36,455 square meters, including an additional circular pavilion of 44 floors. The Petronas Twin Towers cover a total building area of 395,000 square meters, with a vast open space of about 213,750 square meters. The two Petronas Towers are connected by a skybridge measuring 58.4 meters in length at a height of 170 meters, specifically on the 41st and 42nd floors. This skybridge is recognized as the highest skybridge in the world.

Construction Process And History of The Petronas Twin Towers

In terms of construction, the Petronas Twin Towers achieved notable milestones. The foundation of the towers, reaching a depth of 120 meters, is recorded as the deepest foundation in the world for a building. The planning of the iconic Kuala Lumpur landmark began on January 1, 1992, while the actual construction started on March 1, 1993. The construction of both towers was completed in 1996 and officially inaugurated on August 31, 1999, by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad.

The completion of the Petronas Twin Towers in 1998 ended the reign of Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) as the world's tallest building from 1973 to 1998. Unfortunately, in 2004, Taipei 101—a skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan, with a height of 508.2 meters—surpassed the Petronas Twin Towers as the tallest building in the world. Despite losing the title of the world's tallest building, the Petronas Twin Towers still hold three unbroken world records: the World's Tallest Twin Buildings, the World's Highest Skybridge, and the World's Deepest Foundation for a building.

The Petronas Towers were designed by Argentine architect Cesar Pelli. The construction cost amounted to $1.6 billion USD. The project involved two separate consortia of contractors for each tower. The first tower was constructed by the Mayjaus Joint Venture consortium, led by Hazama Corporation of Japan, including JA Jones Construction Co, MMC Engineering Services Sdn Bhd, Ho Hup Construction Co. Bhd, and Mitsubishi Corporation. The second tower was built by the SKJ Joint Venture consortium, headed by Samsung Construction and Trading Corporation (Samsung C&T Corporation) from South Korea, including Kukdong Engineering & Construction, and Syarikat Jasatera Sdn Bhd.
