The Pure Source of Water at Gruner See

Gruner See does not receive water flow from any rivers. The lake's pure water comes from the melting mountain snow, making it exceptionally clean and clear, although the water temperature is very cold, around 6 - 8°C. The name Gruner See, meaning Green Lake, comes from its emerald-like water color. The exact size of Gruner See cannot be determined precisely as the lake's dimensions change according to the season. Gruner See can be considered a seasonal lake. This lake is unique as it becomes a large and beautiful lake at certain times when it receives abundant water supply, but at other times, this beautiful lake disappears completely.

Flora and Fauna of Gruner See

By the end of autumn through winter, Gruner See transforms into a clear water natural pond. The pond's water depth is only about 1 to 2 meters, and at times, the pond may even disappear entirely. In spring, as temperatures rise and snow begins to melt, Gruner See starts to fill with water, gradually transforming from a small pond into a small lake with emerald-colored water. The lake is home to various aquatic fauna such as small crabs, snails, water fleas, and various species of trout. Due to the lake's rocky bottom, Gruner See only has a few aquatic plants.

Transformation of Gruner See from A Small Pond to A Lake

In April, Gruner See begins to fill with snowmelt. The chalk dust in the snowmelt causes the lake's water to appear a vivid blue-green color. The lake's water level depends on the amount of snow accumulated in the previous winter. During the summer, the depth of Gruner See can reach 8.5 to 11 meters. While the snow has not completely melted, Gruner See appears as a small natural pond, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery with lush tree groves. In this area, benches are available for resting. As the temperatures rise and more snow melts, the lake gradually expands. The surrounding park, footpaths, small bridges, and benches will disappear, sinking into the lake.
